As Israel and Hamas continued their deadly conflict in Gaza Thursday, the hacker group Anonymous rallied towards the Palestinians' side, launching an electronic digital attack against websites belonging on the Israeli government.
Beginning early Thursday morning, the hacker group announced a mission for crash and deface websites belonging towards the Israeli Defense Forces, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu as well as other Israeli websites belonging to security and financial corporations, based on Global Post.
On Twitter, a forex account linked to Anonymous called on followers to tear down more than 40 websites belonging on the Israeli government and military. The group is acknowledged for launching so-called "denial of service" attacks that overwhelm websites with traffic, causing them to crash.
“To people of Gaza and also the 'Occupied Territories', realize that Anonymous stands along in this fight," the group said in a very statement. "We will do everything in our chance to hinder the evil forces from the IDF arrayed against you. We will utilize all our resources to ensure that you stay connected towards the Internet and remain capable of transmit your experiences to the world."
The hacker group posted a communication on one website claiming to get taken down Israeli’s “top security and surveillance website.” The statement included a photo of what the group said were burning buildings in Gaza and said: “We Anonymous won't sit back watching a cowardly Zionist State demolish innocent people’s lives.”
The hacker group also released a "care package" with tools for staying online in the event the Israeli government cuts off Internet access in Gaza. Another hacker group called Telecomix posted a message online with instructions concerning how to use dial-up Internet to be connect when the Web is de-activate.
But while heavy on rhetoric, Anonymous' mission may not have caused much harm. Forbes writer Andy Greenberg notes that most of Anonymous’ target websites were still online.
The long-simmering conflict relating to the Israelis and Palestinians sharply escalated Wednesday, with rocket fire and Israeli airstrikes. The fighting has killed at the very least 15 Palestinians and a minimum of three people in Israel in the last two days, as outlined by The Associated Press.
The conflict has played out not only on the battlefield, but in addition online, with leaders from each side broadcasting their attacks on Twitter in real time.
